Congress venue

Santander is a port city, capital of the region of Cantabria and located on the northern coast of Spain. The northern regions of Spain are often the less spoilt by tourism and also less known to foreign visitors, but the north of Spain keeps some of the jewels of the country: amazing landscapes and charming beaches, friendly people and nature preserves.

Santander is an elegant city, which extends over a wide bay with views of the Cantabrian Sea. Its historic quarter includes a group of majestic buildings, which are located against an incredible natural backdrop of sea and mountains. Its marine and commercial tradition is linked to a century old history of tourism, which has its main attractions in the famous "El Sardinero" area and "La Magdalena" Peninsula.

The Coastlab18 will be held from Wednesday 22 to Friday 25 May 2018 in the Magdalena Palace.

The Magdalena Palace will be the venue for Coastlab18. It is the most emblematic building of Santander and one of the most prominent examples of civil architecture in northern Spain. Surrounded by a majestic landscape, it is located at the highest point of the Peninsula bearing the same name. Its construction, between 1908 and 1912, following the plans of the architects Gonzalo Bringas and Javier González de Riancho, resulted from a municipal initiative: the Town Council wanted to present Kings Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia with a summer residence to consolidate the summer tradition that was taking root in the city and its province. The monarchs and their children spent their summers between 1913 and 1930 in Cantabria.

The Palace offers a perfect combination of tradition and modernity, its monumental appearance contrasts with the updated facilities used for university courses during the summer and for the celebration of great events throughout the year. Since its restoration in 1995, it has held very important meetings such as the Spanish-French summit and the meeting of Tourism Ministers from the EU.

The facilities include an Auditorium, which can hold up to 324 people, to be used for plenary sessions. In addition, three additional rooms with capacity for 80 people and two for 52 people respectively, will be available for parallel sessions. An area for exhibition will be set for companies and organizations willing to participate in the Coastlab18 exhibition.
